PIVOT/Men’s Health Matters – day 2

Welcome to day of – PIVOT/Men’s Health Week.

How’d you go with day one? Was there something that surprised you? Perhaps reassured you?

Day 2 digs a little deeper into what inspires, and infuriates, us in our daily lives.
I invite you to join me and spend 5 mins exploring 5 topics using some basic starter questions.

Try and let your thoughts flow without analysing them too much. Let them find their own landing place – picture autumn leaves floating before settling on the ground. Accept them.MMHW_PIVOT2

Today’s topics are:

  • Intentional – HOW are you tuning in to your daily life? Do you find time is drifting by with little or no sense of fulfilment, meaning, milestones or achievement? How are you breaking that feeling of “going through the motions”? This is especially important as we embark on winter (here in Australia) and may experience SAD (seasonal adjustment disorder) and the feeling of the “winter blues”. 
  • Investigative – what are you learning? How are you growing? An extensive study in the UK into health and wellbeing identified that to “Keep Learning” is one of five (5) keys to wellbeing. You can read more about this at 5 Ways to Wellbeing
  • Invigorating – what is life giving and bringing inspiration, joy and fulfilment? Are there hobbies or activities that enrich, re-charge and create a spark of inspiration and encouragement for your soul? 
  • Intuitive – are you listening to your gut? What is it saying and are you being true to yourself? Do you even know what that means? Do you trust your gut?
  • Incensed – What are your triggers and things, people, habits, circumstances that cause angst and irritation? How are you managing these? Let’s get honest here guys – we all have triggers! The important thing is knowing our triggers and learning how to healthily manage these! Anger is just another emotion – like any other emotion such as sadness, grief, fear, joy, disgust, anxiety or shame – and is almost always secondary to some internal or external stimulus. It’s important to understand as men that anger is a mask, a cover for something deeper. Typically, one of the primary emotions, like fear or sadness, can be found underneath anger. Fear includes things like anxiety and worry, and sadnesscomes from the experience of loss, disappointment or discouragement. Anger can provide a surge of energy and make you feel more in charge, a sense of (misplaced) empowerment, rather than feeling vulnerable or helpless. Add to this higher levels of testosterone and a still-developing brain in young(er) men and the explosive surges can happen in the blink of an eye, without clear thought, and sadly can often have life-altering implications.
